Named after one of the Austrian pioneers in organic chemistry, this lecture series aims on bringing some of the most innovative and influential organic chemists to Austria each year. ADOLF LIEBEN LECTURER 2025: Prof. Peter R. Schreiner, Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen, Germany. Prof. Schreiner studied chemistry at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany) and the University of Georgia, Athens (USA). He obtained his doctoral agree in organic chemistry with Prof. Schleyer (Erlangen) and his PhD in computational chemistry with Prof. Schaefer III (Athens). Afterwards he started his independent career at the University of Göttingen (Habilitation in 1999), followed by a three year assoc. Prof. position at the University of Georgia. In 2002 he joined the University of Giessen as a full professor for organic chemistry. Prof. Schreier is well-known for his pioneering work in the integration of computational chemistry and synthetic chemistry and catalysis, particularly his groundbreaking contributions to organocatalysis and the understanding of dispersion interactions in catalysis. Analytische Chemie trägt nicht nur zum grundlegenden Erkenntnisgewinn bei, sondern auch zur Erhöhung der Qualität und Wertschöpfung unserer Produkte und zum Schutz der menschlichen Gesundheit. Gerade dieser Aspekt wurde durch die Corona-Pandemie der breiten Öffentlichkeit eindrücklich vor Augen geführt. It is the 26th edition of this traditional yearly reunion of Austrian glycoscientists. Starting with only a handful of pioneers of the Austrian Carbohydrate community, today our meetings to attract around 100 scientists from all areas of the glycosciences: Synthetic Glycochemistry Glycobiology Glycan Analysis Carbohydrate Based Materials Technology of carbohydrate based systems In tradition of our former meetings alongside prestigious plenary and invited lectures, particularly our younger colleagues will find opportunity to present their results with a focus set on presentations from PhDs and young PostDocs. As new feature, this year, we aim to unite glyco-scientists from academia and industry to enable new and promote old collaboration or initiate contacts between future employers and employees. There will be plenty of time for networking during a welcome hour, the coffee breaks as well as a short beer reception followed by a dinner on Thursday night which all participants are encouraged to join. Januar 2026 Batteries for the Energy Transition: Complexity, Materials and Emerging Analytical Tools Batteries for the Energy Transition: Complexity, Materials and Emerging Analytical Tools Dr. Christian Prehal (Universität Salzburg) 14.01.2026, 17:15 Uhr Universität Innsbruck , L.EG.200 Innrain 80-82, CCB Batteries are key for the energy transition but require major progress in sustainability, cost, and energy density. These challenges arise from the complexity of battery materials, where multiple phases interact across different length scales. Gaining deeper insight into this complexity increasingly involves real-time operando characterization and machine-learning-based data analysis. I will begin with an introduction to today's Li-ion battery technology and the broader challenges facing the battery field, including performance limitations, sustainability concerns, and Europe's reliance on critical raw materials. This will set the stage for discussing future directions in battery research and why alternative chemistries such as lithium-sulfur and sodium-ion batteries are attracting increasing interest. To illustrate how modern research approaches address these challenges, I will present work from our ERC-funded Energy Materials Lab. Using operando small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering, cryo-electron microscopy, and machine-learning-assisted data analysis, we directly track nanoscale structural changes in working lithium-sulfur batteries. These insights help understand electrochemical conversion mechanisms in sulfur cathodes and guide the design of improved lithium-sulfur cells. As a second example, I will present our work on sustainable sodium-ion battery anodes based on tailored hard carbon. By combining machine-learning-based materials optimization with X-ray scattering, we establish clear links between processing, structure, and electrochemical performance.

Oktober 2024 34th International Symposium on Chromatography "The International Symposium on Chromatography (ISC) represents the oldest conference series focussing on separation science. ISC symposia have been organised since 1956 in each even year. ISC is internationally recognised as one of the premier meeting series for discussion of all modes of chromatography and separation science with a broad coverage of techniques and applications. The theme for the symposium is “ Imagine a world of Chromatography ” and the symposium programme will reflect this theme covering the many disciplines where chromatography is an essential component of the analytical workflow. This will include applications of separation science in pharmaceutical, petrochemical, environmental, food and health sectors, as well as lectures on the fundamentals aspects of separation science and new technological developments. The symposium will also highlight new challenges and emerging opportunities for both separation science and associated detection technologies. As an integral part of the scientific programme of lectures and poster sessions, an exhibition and vendor seminars on instrumentation and services for chromatography, separation science and mass spectrometry will be organised. ISC 2024 will provide the perfect forum for attendees from academia, industry and government research institutions for scientific exchange and networking.
