Stock rechts über den Gang zum Hintereingang des Hörsaals About: This talk will showcase the exploration of purely heterogeneous (solid-state), purely homogeneous (molecular), and hybrid photosystems for light-driven water splitting, which my team has accomplished over the past 8 years. In the first part of the talk, I will introduce you to photocatalysis, discuss its challenges, and give a few relevant examples from our systematic study of earth-abundant transition-metal-based co-catalysts for water oxidation and reduction [1-3]. I will then look at photocatalysis from the homogeneous perspective and talk about the design of novel polyoxometalate clusters and their light-driven performance toward water-spitting reactions [4,5]. I will next introduce a hybrid approach that bridges both fields and allows to combine advantages of molecular and solid-state photosystems. As a prime example of this combination, I will showcase the use of fully inorganic molecular clusters as surface-immobilized co-catalysts for photocatalytic water-splitting reactions [6,7].On one hand, I will discuss the covalent attachment of a [Mo 3 S 13 ] 2- thiometalate anion to photoactive surfaces for light-driven hydrogen evolution [8,9]. On the other hand, I will present an example of linker-mediated electrostatic binding of [Co 2 W 11 ] 7- polyoxometalate onto the TiO 2 surface for photocatalytic water oxidation [10]. Durch einfache phänomenorientierte Experimente lernen sie verstehen, was z.B. Lebensmittel, Farben, Bekleidung, Reinigungsmittel oder auch Kosmetik mit Chemie zu tun haben, was sich – chemisch betrachtet – dahinter verbirgt und wie sie uns das Leben erleichtern und bereichern. Die Kinder sammeln erste Erfahrungen im praktischen Arbeiten, Beobachten und Verstehen von Phänomenen aus Wasser, Luft, Kohlendioxid, Farben oder Kunststoffen. Das Mitmachlabor fördert auf diese Weise den Forschergeist der Kinder und Jugendlichen in einem Alter, in dem dieser besonders ausgeprägt ist und motiviert die Fortgeschrittenen, ihr Wissen aus dem Chemieunterricht praktisch anzuwenden und zu vertiefen. Begleitet werden die Schülerinnen und Schüler durch ausgebildete Betreuer, die ihnen intensiv zur Seite stehen." Moreover, PHOTOCAT24 aims to facilitate interaction between academia and industry by creating a European network for advanced training in sustainable chemistry. The opening and closing ceremonies of the school will take place at the headquarters of Palazzo Bo and the Botanical Garden . PHOTOCAT24 will feature the participation of sixteen speakers , whose presentations will be distributed in twelve lectures, chaired by members of the Scientific and Organizing Committees . The participating speakers are the top experts in the field of photo and biocatalysis , as evidenced by their presence in the lists of world’s Highly Cited Scientists (Clarivate Analytics) and the relevance of their publications. Two poster presentation sessions of the participants’ research are also scheduled. The most relevant contributions will be selected by a group consisting of members of the Organizing and Scientific Committees and the speakers, and will have the opportunity to present their results through a short oral presentation .
